Is steam cleaning bad for my carpet? No. This misconception is rooted in early experience with some carpets made with the old "jute" backing. Carpets are no longer manufactured with jute backing. The overwhelming majority of carpet mills and carpet-fiber manufacturers recommend steam cleaning. A properly steam-cleaned carpet will NOT shrink, mildew, or resoil rapidly. Why steam clean? Restorative steam cleaning is the only method that will reach, emulsify, and remove soil from the ENTIRE carpet fiber--top to bottom, root to stem. However, the do-it-yourselfer normally does not have access to professional quality carpet cleaning equipment, and you should have your carpets professionally cleaned about every twelve months. Rental equipment makes your carpet look nicer, but you don't get the full health benefits offered by professional-grade, truck-mounted equipment.
